MICROSOFT/WINDOWS UPDATE

ROLE: UX Designer II, Server & Management Studios, 2008-2010.

SUMMARY: Microsoft Update and Windows Update service hundreds of millions of Windows PCs around the world. This project was a version one desktop client for managing the full lifecycle (creating to releasing an update), and the Windows Update client in Windows 7.

The extra challenge was to adapt a process for user centered design in an agile development setting.

MICROSOFT UPDATE

Version One of a Software and Update Release Manager desktop client. Prior to this, the process was a very manual one, employing a number of non connected tools. Microsoft teams and the Service Administrators benefited by using this one tool for the lifecycle management of software updates.

MICROSOFT UPDATE

Before and after comparison of the Applicability Rules Builder (metadata attached to a software update). Through field observations of user workflows and cognitive walkthroughs, readability and usability was greatly improved.

MICROSOFT UPDATE

Workflow from generative research, early sketches, and final design of Applicability Rules Builder. A Cognitive Walkthrough of a wireframe prototype was used to evaluate the design.

MICROSOFT UPDATE

Summary of UX activities across sprints. The engineering team switched from waterfall development to agile during the Product Lifecycle. UX (Design and Research) also needed to adapt, including planning per sprint, UX backlogs, attending daily scrum, keeping designs low fidelity, and multipurpose research sessions (generative and evaluative).

MICROSOFT UPDATE

Concept infographics illustrating the overall lifecycle, and the applicability sequence. These were part of the resources to help onboard users to the Service.

WINDOWS UPDATE

Feature improvements to the Windows Update client in Windows 7, including summarizing the size of the installation and elevating update details prior to installation.
